Clif Bar: “The company was named after my father, Clifford, my childhood hero and companion throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains. In 1990 I lived in a garage with my dog, skis, climbing gear, bicycle and two trumpets. The inspiration to create an energy bar occurred during a day-long, 175-mile bike ride with my buddy Jay. We’d been gnawing on some other energy bars all day. Suddenly, despite my hunger, I couldn’t take another bite. I thought, ‘I could make a better bar than this!’ That’s the moment I now call ‘The Epiphany.’ Two years later, after countless hours in Mom’s kitchen, the Clif Bar became a reality. And the mission to create a better-tasting energy bar was accomplished.” –Gary Erickson, founder of Clif Bar & Company www.clifbar.com
Columbia Gorge Organic is an honest-to-goodness family farm. Since 1989, the Stewart family has farmed 180 acres in the beautiful Hood River area of Oregon. In fact, we were the very first organic farmers in the area. Dad’s no longer with us, but brothers Jimmy and Ronny and mom, Cheryl, have kept his spirit alive with hard work and dedication to organic farming, sharing the fruits of our labors and a positive
message with as many people as possible! In addition to growing more than 60 varieties of fruit, including stone fruit, pears, and apples, we make pure squeezed and pressed juices right here on the farm. Unlike the big guys, we do everything ourselves: we squeeze, press, or puree our own fruits and veggies, compost greenwaste, and buy directly from small organic farms what we can’t grow on our land. www.columbiagorgeorganic.com
Lifeway Foods: Our story begins in 1986 with kefir, a milk-based cultured drink that is popular in Eastern Europe and is said to be more nutritional than yogurt. That year, Russian immigrant Michael Smolyansky began manufacturing kefir in his basement to bring the taste of his native country to the U.S. After Michael Smolyansky passed away in 2002, his daughter Julie Smolyansky assumed the role of President, while his son Edward Smolyansky assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. Today, Lifeway is the country’s leading manufacturer of
kefir, with multiple flavors and varieties that include lowfat, whole milk and organic versions as well as a children’s line. Helios Kefir, an organic yogurt style beverage, is not only delicious; it’s a nutritional powerhouse! It aids in digestion, boosts the immune system and promotes everyday good health. www.lifeway.net and www.heliosnutrition.com
Odwalla began with three friends, a few boxes of oranges, and a simple vision: make great juice, do good things for the community, and build a business with heart. Today, over 25 years later, they’re still doing
that — adding scrumptious nutritional bars to their repertoire and striving to nourish the rest of the world as much as they nourish your body. The company’s playful name was born from a special song-poem where Odwalla was a leader who guided “the people of the sun” out of the “gray haze” — just as their delicious products help humans break free from the dull mass of over-processed food so prevalent today. www.odwalla.com
Organic Valley Family of Farms: Our philosophy and decisions are based on the health and welfare of people, animals and the earth. We’re a mission-driven cooperative, owned by family farmers, and we’ve been leaders in organic agriculture from the very beginning. Our story starts back in January of 1988—a time when family farms were on the brink of extinction. We were a handful of farmers in SW Wisconsin and we shared a love of the land. We also shared the belief that a new, sustainable approach to agriculture could help family farms and rural communities survive. With shared vision and an invite to the farming community to join us, we created enough momentum to carry us to this day. Powers Winery is the namesake and passion of owners Bill and Greg Powers, who, along with owner Tim DeCook, source grapes from the finest vineyards in the state to create exceptional wines. Their roots in the Columbia Valley run deep, planting Badger Mountain Vineyard in 1982 — a vision which further blossomed in 1990 when it became the first certified organic vineyard in the state of Washington. Together, Powers Winery and Badger Mountain Vineyard represent Bill’s love of the soil, the grapes and the climate which contribute to making a great bottle of wine. www.powerswinery.com

Stiebrs Farms began when Jan and Zelma Stiebrs immigrated to the U.S. from Latvia. In 1953, with a big dream and 100 hens, they started selling eggs door to door, and eventually to businesses in Tacoma. In 1978, Jan and Zelma retired and their children and grandchildren now own and operate the business. Fifty-six years since they sold their first eggs, Stiebrs has employees who gather eggs by hand, care for the animals, work in their processing plant, do their own marketing, and deliver every day to Washington and Oregon. They produce eggs, beef and feed, all certified 100 percent organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. www.stiebrsfarms.com
